Maximizing Beef Calf Revenue Opportunities
Beef Calf Club Development and Management Workshop

Creating opportunities to put more dollars in cattle producers’ jeans is priority #1 for the New Brunswick Cattle Producers Association. This fall, a series of calf management workshops are being held prior to NBCP regional meetings specifically to support producer profitability.

The workshops will feature Ron Stevenson, Business Development Manager at Metzger vet services in Linwood, Ontario. Mr. Stevenson will share his experience with establishing and managing a network of calf clubs in Ontario. The most recent return on investment analysis for calf club members showed a roughly $300 per head market premium for calves sold in specialized calf club sales. We hope to find similar results here in the Maritimes as we move towards implementation of the Maritime Beef Sector Growth Strategy. More information on the strategy is available at: http://www.bovinsnbcattle.ca/develop/

The workshops will also include information on the Verified Beef Production Plus (VBP+) program with Coordinator, Ellen Crane. The VBP+ program is an opportunity for producers to showcase the sound on-farm practices they follow every day. It is a program trusted by both customers and retailers. More information is available on the Atlantic VBP+ page: http://verifiedbeefproductionplus.ca/vbp-regional/atlantic-region/overview-atl.cfm

The workshop agenda will cover the following topics:

1.  Welcome and Introductions
2. VBP+ Program Overview
3. The Ontario Calf Club Experience
4. Building a Herd Health Protocol
5. Herd Health All Year Long
6. Pre-Conditioning Strategies
7. Marketing Strategies to Maximize Revenue Potential
8. Wrap-Up and Head Home

*****Please see the detail below for dates, times and locations for the workshops and NBCP Regional Meetings which will follow. Note that in order to accommodate our guest speaker, several Districts have been combined to host these events, but the election of Regional Directors will be completed, as necessary, for each of the 8 Districts that make up the New Brunswick Cattle Producers Board of Directors.
